Featured Interview With Author Matthew Paris

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?

I was born and raised in Houston, Texas. Loved growing up in Houston and I really excelled at sports. my favorite class was English Literature. I never really thought about writing until I got into college. I attended Texas Tech University, where I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree. Once, I was in college that's is where I took my writing seriously. I studied many great authors like Mary Shelley and Bram Stoker. I learned how to craft a story with a solid opening and fleshing the words out on the page. I don't have any pets at the moment, but I do want a dog soon.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I've always liked books. I think from an early age I liked books. Walking around my elementary school library I always tried to find a book that was interesting. I'm from the 90s, so growing up I didn't have the "Harry Potter" series. But, I remember other children's books like the Dr. Seuss books and "Curious George." I started seriously writing when I attended college. That was my first time of doing it seriously. However, I've been writing in English Class from an early age. Learning grammar, and how to craft a story.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favorite authors would be Stephen King, Chuck Palahniuk, and Richard Matheson. Their writings are so detailed and very dark at times. It's writing that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I like the light stuff, too. my favorite books are "I am Legend" by Richard Matheson. I'm a big fan for Sun Tzu "The Art of War." What inspires me in my writings is everyday life. You never know when you'll get an idea. It could be anywhere. Something you over heard or something you observed. It could be a situation that happen to you. There are many things that inspire me to write.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
"Honor Among Players" is a book I've had in my mind for awhile. I'm from Houston so I wanted to tell a story from my hometown and the area I grew up in. The main character, Thomas Watson is a middle schooler and great at basketball. It set over the course of a few days in-between game six and game seven of the 1994 NBA Finals. It was the Houston Rockets vs. The New York Knicks. The city of Houston was alive and vibrant. Thomas has the opportunity to win tickets to game seven when he enters a three-on-three basketball tournament. It's about his obstacles he needs to face leading up to game seven. It's a feel good book and a book for all ages.
