Featured Interview With Author Chad Miller

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?

I have been writing for over 25 years, honing my craft. I've recently released two books in the past year. I write dark fiction and my two tales are historical mysteries with some horror mixed in. I was born and raised in Philly. Even though I now live in Deleware, I miss my hometown and visit anytime I can. I'm a pharmacist (my day job) and a single dad. I love art and culture. When I have extra time I play guitar.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I didn't start reading (aside from school assignments) until my twenties. I picked up The Shining and never looked back. I don't read one particular genre, but I just enjoy good writing. Some of my favorites are Dracula, The Count of Monte Cristo, and The Valley of Fear.

My friend D.K. took a writing class at Syracuse University and he showed me one of his short stories. I was blown away. It was written in a Jack Kerouac style and just brilliant. He inspired me to write my own story. My first attempt was pretty bad, but it was a place to start. I haven't stopped writing since.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I love so many great authors from Stoker to Vonnegut, from Conan Doyle to Cormack McCarthy. I love a good story. It's weird, I write horror, but many horror books I don't like. The classics like Frankenstein and The Exorcist are great, of course, but some in some contemporary horror books, I believe are too focused on the scare and less focused on the characters and the story. It's my firm belief that characters make the book and I try to incorporate that into my own writing. I love flawed characters. I had an argument with a fellow author who said that every story follows the same template. You have a good guy, a bad guy, a main conflict, and a struggle but in the end the good guy wins. I dispute this. I don't see things in black and white.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My newest book The Confession is loosely based on the Lizzie Borden murders. It's set in the late 1800s and throws you into the murder scene. As the police are investigating and sorting out the sordid details, the story pulls back and shows us the family and all their tension, drama, and turmoil leading up to the murders. We then see the investigation and when the police make arrest, the boiling pot on the stove explodes.
